I was born on 13 June 1949 in Lady Brand. I worked for ABSA Bank (then VOLKSKAS) for 36 years. In June 1976 I got married to Ilona and had two children Bertus and Anton. During 2000 I was diagnosed with Lymph Cancer and received chemotherapy. The cancer went into remission, but in 2004 I was diagnosed again and went for chemotherapy again. During January 2005 when I had to go for the last treatment, a tumour was discovered in my nose cavity during a scan. Because this developed during chemo, the Specialist found that no more treatment would work and gave me a few months to live. I had constant pain. In May 2005 I had a stroke and in August 2005 I went on Early Pension because of my condition. In this time I called upon God and prayed for healing. Allot of people prayed for me. A work colleague from Polokwane named Nathi Twala prayed for me in hospital and I felt the Lord’s presence. Ilona and I visited Anton at Alon Farm in December 2005. They prayed for me and I felt the presence of God. I was totally aware that only God could heal me, which was exactly what happened, it’s only God’s grace that I am still alive. During July 2007 we moved to Mosselbay and it is going very well with me. I went to see a specialist and he told me that the cancer is in remission. I started playing bowls and joined a bible study group. Anton came to salvation 8 years ago. He joined the community of Alon Christian Fellowship and just as Abraham did so many years ago, he also was obedient to God’s calling. He left his familiar surroundings and venture into what God planned for his life. Anton got married to Kyla and our first grandchild has just been born. I came to realise that as a parent I have not always been there for my children and that I have not always been a good example. Because of this I thank the Lord that they are where they are today in Him. I am also thankful that they both are children of God and that everyday with their eyes on Jesus they can run the race with zeal (Heb 12:1-2). |
